A real life moral dilemma

Various German news sources today report the tragic death of a Bavarian mountaineer in the Austrian Alps. He and his two friends were attempting to hike from one hiker’s hut to another in bad weather. Due to snowfall, the four hour hike turned into an all-day epic. Somewhere between  300 to 500 m (1000-1,600 ft) away from the hut, two of the three friends are too exhausted to continue. The third, somewhat younger, hiker is now confronted with a true moral dilemma: he can carry at most one of the two to the nearby hut, the other one will have to be left to die in the snow. We don’t know why he chose to rescue the one he in fact chose, but we know that the other one died, while the rescued one lives.
